My 6 year old son has been struggling to read and I have been looking everywhere for a series of books that will make him want to read. He loves these Fly Guy stories and he laughs every time he reads them. This is the first in the series and I gave it to him for Christmas. It is really nice to see him find a book that he actually likes to read. He can read the whole story without troubles, he had to ask what a few words were the first time through but now reads it to himself.These are really short chapter books and are best for kids that either have short attention spans (like mine) or like to feel an immediate sense of accomplishment. The chapters each have about 15-25 words and there are 3-5 chapters in each story. This means that he can read a whole book in 10 -15 minutes and then move on to something else.I am really hoping that these will be the gateway books to a love of reading for my son and so far they seem to be working as intended.
Just called over my 7 year old daughter Alexa and asked if she liked the book. (She read it weeks ago.) She told me the whole story, beginning to end. How's that for comprehension? Than you Fly Guy. I asked, how many stars? She insisted on five. .
My second grade student who is a reluctant reader loved this book. In fact, as soon as he saw it he grabbed it and said "can I have this?" I told him that as soon as he could read the whole book without my help, he could take it home. We put this book in his book bag the next day!
I bought this for my 4-year-old grandson who is a beginning reader. I know he'll love the humor and the wonderful illustrations. I went to the library and checked out most of the books in the series and I found this (I believe it is the first in the series) to be the best of the bunch. It has a nice story that makes sense and will be fun for a beginning reader. Some of the other stories seem sort of slapped together in terms of the text, the storyline and selection of vocabulary. This particular book rates up there with Dr. Seuss for being attractive to a beginning reader in terms of the use of simple words with repetition as well as an engaging story line and hilarious illustrations. All the books include the great illustrations, I just wouldn't purchase them to keep for reading many times over. This one is worth owning.
I bought this book to use with adult ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Above each word, I had a student write in the Spanish word. It was fun to see the students take great pride in reading the book in English. It was even more fun to see their expressions when they understood different parts of the story. It's a great little story and very well written.
I for one, love the Fly Guy Hardcover books with the foil covers. I liked the Fly Guy Books so much, I had to get them all for my son. Now, let's talk about the first book - Hi! Fly Guy. The cover is one of the nicest of the lot (it changes colors and the design moves when you move it back and forth). The story is about a boy named Buzz, who is trying to find a pet. And then there's a fly looking for something slimy to eat. BOING! The fly and the boy meets, the boy puts him in a jar - but can a fly be a pet when flies are pests? The books are fun, nicely drawn, and fun for the little ones to read. We love the Fly Guy books and recommend them.
... "Fly Guy is very funny because he can say Buzz's name. The reason I gave it 3 stars was because I like other books a little bit better. I don't like the short chapters. I used to buy (sic) Fly Guy books at the library a lot." Papa says: A fun, quick read that beginning readers can puzzle through and understand on their own. Parental upgrade to 4 stars for engaging her enough to want to read through to the end even when she was just starting as a reader.
My son absolutely loves this book. Bought for school summer reading list and now he wants the whole series. Great practice for him while still learning to read.
