I read this one week as part of some doctoral studies. Not only does Merton give a clear explanation of who the early desert Abbas and Ammas were and how they came to be, but he also gives the word of these early Christian pastoral counsellors. . .words that one can still use to seek transformation of ome's self, today. I will be reviewing this again and again as the future years go by. It's content will always be relevant. One problem comes in when citing it; I found that the page numbers in Kindle are not stable. It would be best to cite the hard copy of this text.

I know it is not neccesarily a Thomas Merton composition, but this is my favorite Thomas Merton book. Merton's love and reverence for the desert fathers shines on every page, and the wisdom he presents is as close to the truly universal as anything offered in Christianity. The sayings Merton chooses express the inner-experience very well. These desert fathers were not men who looked outside of themselves for a savior, or for something from some other world. They looked inside of themselves for a savior, and understood it was something that can be discovered and realized in our world. It is so interesting to read these sayings, which were written prior to anything formal like the Council of Nicea. In our time, it is easy to forget that we have one, mainstream, version of Christianity, whether it be Catholic, Protestan, or even the more isolated sects like Mormonism. However, Christianity in its current state is a development. The sayings of these desert fathers proves that. They existed before modernity, but they exemplify what modern Christianity sees as an ideal. They lived it. These sayings are a primary source. If you want to be inspired, tihs is a wonderful book. Merton does not offer his usual high brow analysis that is very difficult to fully grasp. This is a simple presentation by a remarkable monk who managed to live and inpsire many people, whether Christians or not. This book will enhance your Christian faith, and if you aren't a Christian, this book will reveal why Christianity is so remarkable. It's a win-win.

While the lives we lead here and now might seem wholly other than those lived by the holy ones who sought to encounter the LORD in the Judean and Egyptian deserts (just like Jesus and John the Baptist and the prophets of old did before them), nothing could be farther from the truth.Sinful and destructive patterns of thoughts and action we know as Lust or Pride or Gluttony they named as Demons sent by the Evil One. They also knew that these demons could have power over them from within because of the fallenness of human nature. The Desert Fathers (and Mothers - whose wisdom and spiritual insight is regrettably not presented here) were master psychologists long (indeed, more than a thousand years) before the likes of Freud or Piaget or Ellis crawled about on the nursery floor.Pay no heed to the harsh desert environment in which the Fathers lived. Instead, drink deeply from the fresh waters of wisdom, which spring forth from the Spirit alive in their souls.

I've always loved Thomas Merton. I first came across his writing when I was in college, and I devoured his Seven Story Mountain multiple times over the years. This little book, The Wisdom of the Desert Fathers, is one of his shorter books, and it was apparently one of his favorites that he wrote. The Desert has held a special fascination for followers of Jewish and Hebrew religions, as well as Christianity. I feel that the simplicity of these stories get straight to the point of living a Christian life.

Merton is a mystic himself so his perspective on the Desert Fathers and their spirituality is somewhat mystical. As I read this very short book, I found myself longing to cast off our busy, everyday world filled with noise and too much STUFF for a simpler life where I meet my needs by the work of my hands and meet my God through continual prayer. The theme of the Fathers is fuge, tace, et quiesce -- flee, be silent, be at rest -- which Merton brings out very well. The short selection from the Sayings of the Desert Fathers gives great insight into their thinking, their prayer, their life, and their spirituality.I recommend this book (only about 50 pages) for anyone who is looking to find a new perspective on life. I also recommend it as a multiple read book, i.e., a book you can read over and over again and get more out of it each time. I have read it more than once.

You don't need Zen koans or ancient Vedas to experience profound wisdom. The Christian tradition is alive with the thoughtful and profound insights of its own holy men and women. Fr. Thomas Merton assembled in this handy little book some of his favorite sayings of the desert fathers of 1400 to 1800 years ago. The sayings, uttered by monks and hermits living in the Egyptian wilderness and religious communities, reflect the pure faith, vision and mystical experiences of these holy men. Whether on virtue and vice, solitude, prayer, scripture, temptation or dozens of other topics, the reader will find humor, profundity and sacred reflections on every page. A must read.

Thomas Merton was a Trappist Monk and wrote this book that contains his favorite quotes from 'Verba Seniorum'. He chooses these for himself and his fellow monks in order to make some of the sayings of the Desert Fathers more accessible. He begins this book with a very well written introduction.Merton wrote this book not as a history of the early Desert Fathers. What he provides are a selection of extracts from their writings that had proved useful for him in his contemplative life. The book is definitely worth reading. A book you will keep by your night stand. If you are looking for a book that gives you a history of the Desert Fathers and a wide range of their writings, then this is the wrong book for you.
