From the Inside Flap
The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. One of the most moving and meaningful plays of our generation. "a tidal wave of a drama." -- "New York World-Telegram And Sun

There is no reason to buy this version since the ONLY true extra is the awful, rambling, dull Wikipedia-level audio commentary. (Trailers don't count.)An audio commentary is supposed to be commenting upon what's happening on-the screen at THAT moment. This dude goes off on rambling tangents about the history of the three main actors, defending the director (we don't need this defense, we love the movie) and offers absolutely NOTHING new that lovers of the film don't already know. It is supposed to be supplemental to what you are watching and not get in the way.I got the feeling he was improvising, because at one point he says, when Gene Kelly appears...oh here's this character....what's his name??? (I kid you not),"WHAT'S HIS NAME?????"People who love this movie can rattle off the name E.K. Hornbeck in an instant, and this guy had to think about it??? On the track???Audio commentaries should be experts in film or technique who can point out things the ordinary viewer should look for. For example Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdonavich's tracks on "Citizen Kane" (although Ebert did a lot more homework than Bogdonavich.)This guy presents biographies of all the actors, including supporting actors, totally ignoring what's on screen, it could have been a commentary on any movie. Here's some of the useless trivial nonsense this guy manages to work in:Sherriff Lobo...spinoffsM*A*S*H (ok, but also talking about After M*A*S*H???)Donald Trump, etc.Spencer Tracey's wife was an active fundraiserHe had an affair with Loretta Young.Additionally, this commentator shows little knowledge beyond what lovers of this movie already know. You love a movie, you Google everything you can about it....but a commentator should be providing insights you can't read on-line and not recycling Hollywood stories we all know.A wonderful movie still badly in need of a fully-loaded, 2-disc 60th anniversary version with historians and scholars all weighing on multiple-tracks.If you already have it on DVD, save your money, because you won't learn anything new with this dude.
A fictionalized telling of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" of the 1920's, about a Tennessee law that forbade teaching about evolution. The characters and some of the events were changed to improve the story, but the essential issue is clear. A great story tole by an outstanding cast. If Spencer Tracy is before your time, you are in for a treat.
Historically accurate and extremely well-done. All-star cast and excellent cinematography. Chilling, funny, tragic, ironic. An extra bonus in finding that Gene Kelly can really act, portraying H. L. Mencken, the famed reporter and cynic from the Baltimore Sun who went south to cover this farcical trial, where the law was on trial more than the defendant. The names of the characters were all changed to protect the guilty, but the circumstances reveal it as the trial of the teacher (Scopes) who defied the law to teach evolution in a southern Bible Belt state. My highest recommendation.
A famous legal case in 1925 is put into a more accessible version than a textbook's rendition of it in Inherit the Wind. The famous Scopes Monkey Trial took place in Tennessee and was brought to the attention of the world because a teacher was put on trial for teaching Darwinism in the classroom. It was, back then, against the law to teach anything that would go against the Bible, but biology was becoming more and more accepting towards the theory of evolution across the nation.Inherit the Wind takes the story, changes a few names, and delivers an incredibly dynamic and beautiful movie that is still relevant today as it was back in the 60s. With juggernaut actors such as Spender Tracy, Fredric March, and Gene Kelly, we cannot help but thing upon glancing at the cover that this will be a good film. Thankfully, it doesn't disappoint. The language, alone, is enough to melt hearts, make people laugh, and raise eyebrows. The dialogue is absolutely perfect and you will find yourself in love with E. K. Hammond's character and cheering for Henry Drummond. The movie focuses on them along with the character of Matthew Harrison Brady as opposed to the teacher who is played by Dick York. The battle scenes are in the courtroom and just as exciting as if it were a war movie. What's most inspiring about the film is that although it is based on a story that's almost 90 years old and a movie that is 54 years old it is still relevant. The worry about what is being taught, or not taught, in the classrooms is always a concern and, as a teacher myself, the worry that great minds are being squandered by technology and lack of respect/motivation is a constant complaint throughout many schools today. An enlightening, influential, and sarcastic-laden film worthy of anyone to watch once if not frequently.
This is a good clear transfer in the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Depending on your TV set, you might be able to expand your picture to fill the screen at 1.85:1, which is also perfectly watchable due to the way the picture was composed when it was photographed. This film used to be shown on NBC's "Saturday Night At The Movies" now and then. Amazingly, it was less controversial in 1960 than it is today! For classic movie buffs, you will see many first-class actors doing outstanding performances. Remember, this is a fictionalized version of the Scopes trial -- but much of the courtroom dialogue was taken from court transcripts. This is a must-see!
