I used this book in 1979 for a college class to increase my vocabulary. The protocols used are these best I’ve found that help you figure out the meaning of any word. It’s a classic book
Pretty happy with this book. I have been working my way through it and the process and methods used within work. I needed a vocabulary workbook for adults, and this works great, although I think teenagers could benefit greatly from this as well. Do you want to improve your vocabulary or just keep sharpening your skills and learning? Then get it.
Great book. Helps me (a foreigner) learn new words very effectively. However, I bought the Kindle version, which makes doing exercises on the book very inconvenient. My friend has a mass paper back format but the size is too small for doing exercises. I've just purchases it again, this time a paperback format, which is big enough for doing exercises.
I read this book many years ago and it's amazing that I still remember most of the words. That's a testament to the techniques used in this book for helping its readers to permanently remember the words. I've given this book to my teenage daughter and she loves it (in an educational sort of way!). Word Power is (still!) the best vocab book on the market.
This book was recommended in my Kaplan GRE test book, and it has not disappointed. I just finished working my way through the entire thing, and it has been immensely helpful in expanding my vocabulary and giving me a much stronger understanding of word roots and foundational etymology. Would definitely recommend!
I read this book 52 years ago when I was 15 and my vocabulary really really benefited!!! Easy to read and learn from, and repeats various ways to use each word. It was summer reading. Don't let your high school kid miss this fabulous book
The book is helpful. I like that it's more than a list of words, definitions, and exercises. It also includes other information on etymology and grammatical principles. However, this book was initially published in 1949, and it seems like various parts of the book have not been updated to reflect current notions of society. For example, it is now widely accepted that both introverts and extroverts are equally "normal," but this book defines the most normal people as "ambiverts." Additionally, the opposite of a "male" is not necessarily a "female" (and, as a legal professional, I take issue with a lot of the other opposites--e.g. "working" is the opposite of "idle," instead of "not working"--but I get it, and I can let that go). For someone somewhat familiar with the words, this might not be a problem. For the unfamiliar, I would be wary of learning outdated concepts or definitions.
Great book. You will not regret it. Give it to your children when they are still in high school. It will prepare them for college.
